BAFE to Ensure tenders are third-party certified #bafe #fireindustryassociation, firealarmsystems

BAFE, the registration body for companies that achieve third party certification for their fire protection services, is working hard in an effort to raise fire safety standards in the UK by ensuring that tenders for fire safety contracts require third party certification (TPC).

Supported by the Fire Industry Association (FIA), BAFE strongly recommend that that the installation and maintenance of fire safety equipment be carried out by a competent person who has TPC.

It is recommended that fire detection and alarm equipment should comply with the BAFE SP203 scheme, and portable fire extinguishers comply with ST101/ST104.

Recent reports however,  have revealed that some organisations have encountered advertised tenders that do not specify TPC as a prerequisite and BAFE is therefore encouraging FIA members to make them aware of any such cases.

The general and marketing manager for BAFE , Stephen Adams, has confirmed that the body will then follow up any referred cases and ensure future tenders are modified.

A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government said: "We support third party certification schemes as an effective means of assuring the quality, reliability and safety of products and services, and recognise the valuable role BAFE plays in bringing to the marketplace recognised registration schemes for these products and services."

Child Minders in Scotland must ensure they comply with Fire Safety Regulations

The Scottish government is set to amend fire safety regulations to clarify the law for childminders in the country.

A public consultation recently revealed that many organisations within the childminding sector were unsure if they needed to comply with the fire safety aspects of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.

This prompted the government to move to change the definition of 'relevant premises' in the act to confirm that childminders' premises must abide by the regulations.

Minister for community safety and legal affairs Roseanna Cunningham claimed it is "vital" that every business in Scotland is aware of its fire safety duties.

She said: "The changes I am making to regulations within the act remove any doubt that fire safety obligations apply to childminders' premises.

"I am pleased that we have been able to clarify this important piece of legislation. I will take the necessary steps to amend the legislation shortly after the parliamentary summer recess."

Investigation launched into York pub fire #yorkfire #firesafety #fireriskassessment

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire which swept through an empty pub in York.

Fire crews were called to the Friendship Inn in Millgate, Selby, at approximately 5.25pm on Thursday (31st May) after smoke was seen billowing from its windows and doors.

Two 16-year-old boys who were passing by raised the alarm after they saw the smoke and immediately called the fire brigade.

A fire investigation officer will be at the scene today to determine the cause of the blaze.

A 'suitable and sufficient' fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If the fire risk assessment is deemed to be carried out to an insufficient extent, the Responsible Person can face an unlimited fine or a prison sentence of up to two years.

New homes in Wales to be fitted with sprinklers from 2013 #firesprinklersinhome #sprinklersystems #firesafety

All new homes built in Wales will be fitted with automatic fire sprinklers from 2013, the Welsh government has announced.

From September next year, sprinkler systems will be installed in all new and converted residential properties across the country.

The law was first proposed by Labour AM Ann Jones in June 2007 and has now finally been passed into law six years later.

Ministers estimate that the move will save 36 lives and prevent an estimated 800 injuries between 2013 and 2022.

Environment minister John Griffiths claimed that people need to accept that there is a cost to introducing sprinklers into new properties.

"These proposals are significant and important in taking forward fire safety," he said.

"Wales will be at the forefront of reducing fire risk and cutting the number of avoidable deaths and injuries caused by fires in residential premises."

CEO FIA , Graham Ellicott said: "anything that has the potential to increase fire protection is a good thing and this measure could help to save lives."

Manchester Shop Owner Fined for Nine Safety Breaches #firesafety #fireriskassessment #firealarms

The owner of a shop in Manchester has been fined for nine breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Ahtezaz Akhtar, of Levenshulme, was fined £9,000 after he pleaded guilty to the offences at Tameside Magistrates' Court on May 23rd.

The 28-year-old was also ordered to pay costs of £4,200 to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).

Following an investigation by Environmental Health Officers from Tameside Council in August 2011, concerns were raised about the safetly of the Best One off licence on Birth Street, Ashton.

They found that the floors above the shop were used as sleeping accommodation but discovered a lack of basic fire safety measures, including failure to carry out a fire risk assessment and lack of fire alarm systems.

Deputy county fire officer Jim Owen said: "The vast majority of businesses in Greater Manchester do carry out their legal responsibilities accordingly but this case should be a warning to those who fail to do so that we will take action against them."

He warned firms that the service will prosecute and seek to recover the costs of those firms that put their workers or members of the public at risk.

Lancashire waste disposal centre hit by fire

A waste disposal centre in Lancashire has been damaged after a fire broke out in the premises on Monday morning (21st May).

Six firefighters were called to the facility in Dawson Lane, Chorley, at 8.56pm to tackle the flames emitting from a pile of waste, reports the Lancashire Evening Post.

Officers used breathing apparatus, two thermal imaging cameras and two hose reels to control the blaze, which Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service believes was caused accidentally.

During their battle with the fire, crews also used large loading shovels to remove burning waste from the building before eventually leaving the site at around midnight.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a 'suitable and sufficient' fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales.

If the fire risk assessment is deemed to be carried out to an insufficient extent, the Responsible Person can face an unlimited fine or a prison sentence of up to two years.

Fire crews were called to Kingston University after a student accidentally set fire to her coursework just hours before it was due to be handed in.
