Commercial property leaseholder guilty of Fire Safety Breaches #firesafetybreaches
A Greater Manchester commercial property leaseholder is facing a substantial fine after pleading guilty to a number of fire safety breaches.
Waseem Abbas was using a building in Salford as a mobile phone shop, an internet cafe and a television and radio station.
Following a visit last December by Fire protection officers, a number of serious safety failings were found and Mr Abbas was issued with a prohibition notice that would prevent him from using the first and second floors.
- The only staircase leading to the first and second floor which housed a workshop, office, storage area and rented studios, was blocked by combustible items.
- There were no fire doors and the stairs led to the shop which meant people working upstairs would have been trapped if a fire had broken out.
- Bars were fitted on windows which would have further hampered attempts of escape.
Mr Abbas admitted six offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 on November 8th 2012, including failure to install a fire alarm and failure to carry out a fire risk assessment on the property.
He was fined £3,600 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs.
"This case shows that ignorance and failing to think about fire safety can be very costly," said Peter O'Reilly, director of prevention and protection at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
"The starting point for all businesses should be to do a fire risk assessment which will help them identify how to keep the premises safe."

BAFE to Ensure tenders are third-party certified #bafe #fireindustryassociation, firealarmsystems
BAFE, the registration body for companies that achieve third party certification for their fire protection services, is working hard in an effort to raise fire safety standards in the UK by ensuring that tenders for fire safety contracts require third party certification (TPC).
Supported by the Fire Industry Association (FIA), BAFE strongly recommend that that the installation and maintenance of fire safety equipment be carried out by a competent person who has TPC.
It is recommended that fire detection and alarm equipment should comply with the BAFE SP203 scheme, and portable fire extinguishers comply with ST101/ST104.
Recent reports however, have revealed that some organisations have encountered advertised tenders that do not specify TPC as a prerequisite and BAFE is therefore encouraging FIA members to make them aware of any such cases.
The general and marketing manager for BAFE , Stephen Adams, has confirmed that the body will then follow up any referred cases and ensure future tenders are modified.
A spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government said: "We support third party certification schemes as an effective means of assuring the quality, reliability and safety of products and services, and recognise the valuable role BAFE plays in bringing to the marketplace recognised registration schemes for these products and services."
